Families whose children are doing well in school exhibit the following characteristics.

ESTABLISH A FAMILY ROUTINE

  • provide time and a quiet place to do homework

  • give children responsibility for household chores

  • have firm bedtime routines including reading stories aloud each night

  • are firm about eating dinner together regularly

  •       MONITOR OUT-OF-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

  • set limits on TV watching and electronic games

  • ensure children are supervised during after school activities

  • check up on children when parents are not home

  • set a time to be home after play and stick to it

  • know where children are and who they are playing with

  • MODEL THE VALUE OF LEARNING, SELF-DISCIPLINE AND HARD WORK

  • communicate with children through questioning and conversation

  • demonstrate that achievement comes from hard work

  • discuss and allow children to deal with the consequences of their actions

  • EXPRESS HIGH BUT REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS FOR ACHIEVEMENT

  • set goals and standards for children that are appropriate for their age and maturity

  • recognise and encourage special talents and interests

  • inform friends and family about successes

  • ENCOURAGE CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS AT SCHOOL

  • maintain a warm and supportive home

  • show interest in children’s progress at school

  • work directly with children at home on homework and learning activities

  • discuss the importance of school and education

  • discuss what children might like to be when they grow up

  • keep in regular contact with the child’s school and teacher

  • come to school regularly so children see that home and school are connected

  • ENCOURAGING READING, WRITING AND DISCUSSING
    BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS

  • listen to their child read everyday

  • read to their child everyday

  • talk and ask about has happened during the day

  • encourage story writing and keeping records of holidays, special occasions

  • turn off the TV some evenings and play games or have discussions
