Several new initiatives have been trialled, including Lighthouse Maths, Bond Blocks, and the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematics (APSMO). Teachers work on developing student’s understanding of mathematical concepts deeply, encouraging them to explore and explain their reasoning.
We believe in a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach using concrete materials, visual representations and numerical symbols and representations that help students progress and build a more comprehensive understanding of mathematical ideas.
Teachers encourage students to discuss their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills and reflect on a variety of ways to solve problems efficiently. Our school values the importance of mathematical vocabulary and building the language understanding in maths, teaching mathematical terminology and building upon this vocabulary.
Regular formative assessments are used to help teachers gauge students understanding and adjust instruction accordingly. Each year level sets common assessment tasks and rubrics, aligned to the curriculum to record students’ achievement.
This data is regularly reflected and explored to assist with moderation as well as guide focus areas to work on as individuals, year levels and as a whole school.
