At Landsdale Primary School, we are passionate about supporting the well-being of our students. The whole-school learning program that we use to do this, ‘UR Strong’ teaches friendship skills through a curriculum called ‘Friendology.’ Staff and students work together to implement a common language across the school when talking about friendships. During lunchtimes each week, we have student representatives called ‘Friend-o-Leaders.’ These peer mentors assist with Friendship Fires or conflicts that arise between students in the playground. We further develop friendship skills through the UR Strong posters displayed in every class, our designated ‘Talk-it-Out’ space and by celebrating our Friendship Ninja’s with special awards at assemblies.
Another way we further support students’ well-being is through the Zones of Regulation Curriculum which focuses on the feelings and emotions we may encounter in our lives. Feelings are complicated. They come in different sizes, intensities, and levels of energy that are unique within our brains and bodies. To make them easier to talk about, think about, and regulate, The Zones of Regulation organises our feelings, states of alertness, and energy levels into four coloured Zones – Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red. The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation helps make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for learners and those who support them. We learn to regulate our Zones to meet our goals and task demands, as well as support our overall well-being. (https://zonesofregulation.com/how-it-works/).
